Study Finds Selenium and Carotenoid Supplementation Needed to Promote Longevity

December 20, 2005 — The December issue of the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition (Vol. 60, pp 85-91) reports that high antioxidant intake, including selenium and tocopherol, has been shown to protect against chronic health issues. The study focused specifically on supplementing with selenium and carotenoids, noting that nearly 40 percent of the sample population failed to reach the desirable levels of serum selenium concentrations despite eating healthily.

This study follows previous results published in the Archives of Internal Medicine (2004, Vol. 164, pp. 2335-2342) that indicated that supplementation of diet with carotenoid antioxidants, especially beta-carotene, may lower the risk of certain age-related health conditions in men. Another study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2004, Vol. 80, pp. 154-162), reported that increased selenium intake could boost the immune system. These reports add to the growing body of evidence for the health benefits of selenium and carotenoid intake.
