Soy Supplements Increase Bone Mass

Study Reveals that Soy Supplements Increase Bone Mass

March 2, 2006 – The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry reports a significant increase of bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) in women who consumed soy isoflavones. Women in the first decade of menopause experience a dramatic loss in bone mass as a result of a loss of estrogen.

Researchers from Taipei Medical University, Taiwan, tested women who were in the early post-menopausal phase of their lives. “In our study, compared to the general loss of BMD in the control group, the BMD of L1-3 [lumbar vertebrae] and the BMC of the trochanter [thigh bone] significantly increased in the 100 mg isoflavone group,” noted researcher Shih-Yi Huang.
