Survey Finds Most People Lack Essential Nutrients

Survey Finds Most People Lack Essential Nutrients from Diet Alone/Multivitamin Need

According to a recent survey commissioned by the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), most people lack essential nutrients from their diet alone. The survey found that while 81 percent of those asked said that eating a balanced diet was important to them, only 20 percent said they eat a balanced diet every day. This survey also shows that there is room for growth in the supplement market as customers are aware of the need to improve their habits.

“The survey clearly makes the point that most people recognize they do not obtain the recommended amount of essential nutrients from their diet alone,” said Andrew Shao, Ph.D., vice president for Scientific and Regulatory Affairs at CRN. “Multivitamins can help to fill that nutrient gap, and in a way that’s safe, convenient and affordable. The best solution, of course, is to do both-get a balanced diet and take a multivitamin,” added Dr. Shao. The survey may indicate a greater need for multivitamin/mineral supplementation.

Is your nutritional regimen working? Want proof?

Landmark Clinical Study on Scanner presented at FASEB 2006

PROVO, Utah — April 17, 2006 — Your mother was right; All that solid advice mixed with hours of nervous nagging—eat your vegetables, don’t smoke, don’t eat junk, wear sunscreen, don’t stress. What if your mother had a “did-you-follow-your-mother’s-advice” lie detector test? How would you have fared as a child? How would you fare as an adult?

A landmark study conducted in collaboration with three major US universities to test skin carotenoid levels as an indicator of the overall antioxidant network was presented at the annual meeting of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) in San Francisco, California earlier this month. Pharmanex® scientists collaborated with researchers from the University of Utah, Tufts University, and Vanderbilt University on this groundbreaking research which studied over 300 healthy subjects. The study results show that a consumer-friendly tool called the BioPhotonic Scanner provides a good indicator of fruit and vegetable intake, antioxidant nutrition, and oxidative stress, making it an accurate way to measure overall antioxidant health in the body. This easy-to-use tool gives instant results and is non-invasive—requiring neither bodily fluids, tissue samples, nor a laboratory.

The Pharmanex® BioPhotonic Scanner provides a personalized, scientifically validated measurement of how diet and supplementation is protecting a person's cells and overall nutritional health. This portable instrument measures carotenoids as a biomarker for antioxidant health. Carotenoids are powerful antioxidants found in abundance in many fruits and vegetables, and they protect the body at the cellular level against the effects of aging and the environment. The Pharmanex® BioPhotonic Scanner non-invasively measures the carotenoid level in the skin of your palm using a safe blue light and a technology called Raman spectroscopy. By consistently tracking carotenoid antioxidant levels in the body, consumers are equipped with the knowledge to maintain a lifestyle and nutrition habits that will help boost antioxidant levels and maintain proper nutrition and health.

The Science Behind the Study

The study presented at FASEB showed highly significant correlations between skin carotenoids (with the BioPhotonic Scanner) and other blood antioxidants such as vitamins C and E. In addition, a highly significant inverse correlation between skin carotenoids and oxidative stress (free radical damage) was observed. Together these results confirm that the Pharmanex® BioPhotonic Scanner is the best non-invasive indicator of overall antioxidant status in the body, as well as a good indicator of overall oxidative stress.

In addition, the study demonstrated that skin carotenoids as measured by the Scanner are a convenient non-invasive indicator of average fruit and vegetable consumption. Previously, blood carotenoids had been viewed as the gold standard indicator of fruit and vegetable intake. The results also confirmed prior research showing strong correlations between skin and blood carotenoids and that the BioPhotonic Scanner test is as reliable as blood measurements.

“In my career in science, it is not often that a study produces such spectacular and astounding results,” said Pharmanex President and CSO, Dr. Joe Chang. “We have proven that the BioPhotonic Scanner is the best non-invasive indicator of your body’s overall antioxidant protection and not just carotenoid status. This technology shows that skin carotenoids correlate with overall antioxidant status, oxidative stress, and fruit and vegetable intake.”

Measurement of blood antioxidants typically involves invasive blood sampling, extraction and analysis of carotenoids, vitamin E and/or vitamin C by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Blood antioxidant analysis is not practical for use outside the clinic since it is invasive, time-consuming, expensive, and the blood levels are confounded by multiple factors, such as antioxidant consumption from recent meals.

“This is the paramount scientific validation study we have all been anticipating and the results are even better than expected,” said Vice President of Global Research and Development, Carsten Smidt, Ph.D., FACN.

FASEB is a multi-society, interdisciplinary, scientific meeting featuring plenary and award lectures, symposia, oral and poster sessions, career services, and exhibits of scientific equipment, supplies, and publications. More than 12,000 independent scientists representing the sponsoring and guest societies attended the event in San Francisco. This year’s event, held Saturday, April 1 through Wednesday, April 5, 2006, was sponsored by The American Association of Anatomists (AAA); The American Physiological Society (APS): American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB); American Society for Investigative Pathology (ASIP): American Society for Nutrition (ASN); American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET).

Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister gets SCANNED!

Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia is Scanned!

Good Day everyone! I just thought I would pass along the news about the great things that are taking place with Pharmanex. The BioPhotonic Scanner is reaching more global markets everyday. In fact, with the new addition of the S2 (BioPhotonic Scanner), our message for achieving optimal health and the importance of knowing your "number", is spreading like WILDFIRE!

With this incredible, globally patented, Nobel Prize Winning, technology, people are becoming empowered. More and more, as people get their numbers as a result of being "scanned", they are becoming proactive in their own health. They now have a "bio-marker" to measure the results of their efforts.

Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak, the current Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia was recently introduced (on or about March 23, 2006) to the BioPhotonic Scanner and the importance of "knowing your number." The office of the Deputy Prime Minister would be the equivalent of an American Vice President's position. Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak is seen in the photo smiling as his hand is being scanned by the S2 BioPhotonic Scanner.

This is another clear example about the "power of proof" through science. When it comes to individual health, and the direct affect a product may have on one's health, it is extremely important to be accurate. The "marketing hype" that other companies base their products on, only get so far when put to true scientific and clinical study. AND, certainly not into a public official's office as high as the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia.

With over 175 full time scientists on staff, research and clinical studies published in peer reviewed journals, our products speak for themselves. We just like to use the BioPhotonic Scanner as our (!) exclamation point.

If you live in Malaysia, and would like to learn more about the BioPhotonic Scanner, and how you can become involved and build a successful home business with our company, then click on the link and "Take the tour".

If you live outside of Malaysia, to find out if your country is within our current International markets, please go to my website and click on the "choose a country" drop down menu, located at the right-center of the page.

Nature's Sunshine Products Inc. In HUGE Financial Trouble

Those of you that read this blog with any degree of regularity, know that I waste no time to point out turmoil with companies in the nutritional supplement industry. It is my belief that most companies within the nutritional supplement industry, are full of nothing more than marketing hype and absolutely no scientific basis to substantiate any of their products or product claims. In addition, most companies do not even have the financial infrastructure to support scientific research and development for quality products, let alone conduct scientific studies to see if their products even work.

The following report from the Associated Press about one such company, is just one more reason to seriously consider Pharmanex and it's family of products, when searching for the right nutritional supplements to assist you in achieving optimal health. Make no mistake, the product lines offered by Pharmanex are the most comprehensive nutritional supplements on the market today. They have been scientifically proven to work. Our products are science based, with numerous clinical trials and published scientific studies that are available to the public. We substantiate everything we do, with science.

Nature's Sunshine Retracts Financials

Monday March 20, 2:38 pm ET

Nature's Sunshine Products Says Financial Statements Should Not Be Relied Upon

PROVO, Utah (AP) -- Health care product maker Nature's Sunshine Products Inc. on Monday said past financial statements are no longer reliable and warned that it may be delisted from the Nasdaq if it is unable to get a filing extension from the market.

Shares of Nature's Sunshine plummeted on the news.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company stated that an ongoing investigation by the company's audit committee and an independent consultant into "certain of its foreign operations" and past financial statements has found "internal control weaknesses" and "potential violations of law."

Based on preliminary results from an ongoing investigation, the company said, statements for the fiscal years 2002 to 2004 and the first three quarters of 2005, should not be relied upon and may have to be restated.

In addition to retracting the financial statements above, the preliminary report also recommended the termination of undisclosed employees and certain officers.

The company has "contacted relevant authorities in the United States with respect to the potential violations of law outlined in the preliminary report," the filing said.

"At this time, it is impossible to accurately predict whether, and if so, to what extent, any prior periods may need to be restated," the filing continued.

The Nasdaq has granted Nature's Sunshine an extension to March 31, to file its report for the quarter ended Sept. 30. The company does expect to meet that deadline and intends to seek another extension. However, if the Nasdaq panel denies the request and delists Nature's Sunshine, the liquidity of its stock would be hurt, the company warned.

Shares of Nature's Sunshine sank $2.59, or 16 percent, to $13.90 during midday trading on the Nasdaq. The stock has traded in a 52-week range of $12.50 to $23.89.
